What is sheet metal bending?

Sheet metal bending refers to the process in which sheet metal is bent into predetermined angles and shapes – often in combination with forming and joining processes. At BVS Blechtechnik, bending is carried out both manually and fully automatically. With state-of-the-art bending technologies and direct networking of the individual work steps, we ensure that your sheet metal parts come out of our factory with a perfect fit and without reworking.

Preparation and step-by-step instructions

Before each production run, the customer data is checked in detail – ideally we receive it as a step file or in another common CAD format.

  • Step 1: Analysis of the design data and determination of the bending parameters.
  • Step 2: Setting up the CNC-controlled press brake, using automatic tool changes and integrated order management.
  • Step 3: Carry out a test run (possibly with templates to test even complex assembly situations).
  • Step 4: Production of the sheet metal parts – reproducible, precise and efficient.

Bending techniques and bending undercut

Our bending technology includes various processes:

  • Manual folding: For smaller batch sizes and prototypes where flexibility and advice are paramount.
  • Fully automated press brake: With automatic tool change and robot connection – in some cases also with direct material feed, reproducing the desired bending dimensions in the shortest possible time.
  • Automatic swivel bending process: It is used on our P2lean bending centers from Salvagnini to efficiently produce different bends – upwards or downwards – even on complex workpieces.

These techniques enable economical production with high repeat accuracy and minimal set-up times.

Minimum bending radius and material thickness

Compliance with the minimum bending radius is crucial for the material. Our CNC-controlled press brakes and NC-controlled round bending machines are individually adjusted to the material thickness and geometry – depending on the material, fine adjustment is carried out by our specialists.

  • In this way, we guarantee that an exact and reproducible result is always achieved, even with fluctuating sheet metal batches.
  • With press forces of up to 130 t and working ranges of up to 3000 mm, we achieve precise bending processes – regardless of the material or shape specified.

The answer to the shortage of skilled workers – intuitive and future-proof

The all-electric EGB-1303ATCe press brake from AMADA has been added to BVS Blechtechnik’s machine park since the beginning of 2025 – the first installation of its kind in Germany. This is BVS’s targeted response to the increasing shortage of skilled workers in the industry and an investment in a state-of-the-art solution that redefines operating convenience and process reliability.
The machine is consistently designed for easy handling and automated processes: Tablet control, voice guidance, integrated camera monitoring and an augmented reality-controlled backgauge make it possible to efficiently train even less experienced personnel. Bending programs can be created in advance and transferred directly via VPSS 4ie offline programming – this reduces sources of error and saves valuable set-up time.
